Michigan-born Hurdle was a multisport star in Florida

Born in Michigan, Hurdle played high school baseball at Merritt Island (Fla.) High School.

Hurdle hit .567 his senior year, earning All-State and All-American honors and was also a standout quarterback on the football team. He turned down a scholarship to play both baseball and football at the University of Miami when the Royals drafted him ninth overall in 1975.

The reigning National League Manager of the Year Award winner, Hurdle had the baseball field at Merritt Island named after him this past January.

A father of three, Hurdle, his wife Karla and two youngest children currently reside in Pittsburgh, where he's become a well-known and well-liked figure in the community since taking over as the Pirates' manager in 2011. Hurdle was named the '13 Dapper Dan Man of the Year, an award given annually to a Pittsburgh sports figure who achieves on a national level.
