Gennett continuing his rehab assignment

CHICAGO -- With center fielder Carlos Gomez easing back to full-time duty after a stint on the disabled list for a strained hamstring, the Brewers are carefully monitoring second baseman Scooter Gennett's Minor League rehabilitation assignment at Class A Wisconsin, which entered a third day on Sunday.

Gennett, who has been on the DL since lacerating the top of his left hand in a shower mishap, was expected to spend at least four days with the Timber Rattlers before rejoining the Brewers on Tuesday at the earliest.

"No issues with the hand," Roenicke said, before adding, "He still needs to play well before I think we decide what we want to do. I told him when he went down, 'This isn't going through the motions. This is going down to make sure you work, so when we bring you back, you're ready.' If he's not ready -- the hand shouldn't be an issue, other than it's going to be a little tight until that heals completely."

Gennett went 1-for-4 with a single, a walk and a sacrifice fly in his first two games at Wisconsin. He played five innings on Saturday while Gomez, who was reinstated from the DL without a rehab assignment, played six innings against the Cubs.

So a Tuesday return is not set in stone?

"For me, it's not set in stone, no," Roenicke said. "I think it's when he's ready to report here. I know we're [going short] with Gomez, but you can't do that with two people. You don't have the bench to be able to do that. So he's got to be ready when he comes back."
