Nats, int'l free agent Alvarado agree to terms

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have agreed to terms with outfielder Elvis Alvarado from Sabaneta, Dominican Republic, the team announced. The deal is worth $700,000.

The 6-foot-4, 175-pound Alvarado throws and bats right-handed.

"Elvis profiles as a corner outfielder," said Nationals director of Latin American operations Johnny DiPuglia in a statement. "He's got the potential to hit for power and has an above-average arm."

Alvarado, 16, joins outfielder Juan Soto ($1.5 million) and infielder Luis Aquino ($200,000) as international free agents the Nats have agreed to terms with since the July 2 signing period opened.

Each team is allotted a $700,000 base and a bonus pool based on the team's record in 2014, and there are penalties in place for teams exceeding their spending limits. The Nationals' allotment was $2,313,100; they have spent $2.4 million. Teams like the Nats that exceed the pools by 0 to 5 percent have to pay a 100 percent tax.

The Nationals also agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Francisco Constanzo from the Dominican Republic for $10,000. He does not count against their allotment, because teams can sign as many players as they want for $10,000.
