A's claim Matthes, put Parker on 60-day DL

The A's claimed outfielder Kent Matthes off waivers from the Rockies on Thursday, while also placing right-hander Jarrod Parker on the 60-day disabled list.

The club also announced that Parker will undergo his second Tommy John surgery on Monday. Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery in Pensacola, Fla., and Parker likely will miss the entire 2014 season.

Matthes hit .281 with 20 home runs and 63 RBIs in 115 games between Colorado's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates in 2013. A right-handed batter, Matthes hit .364 against left-handers at Triple-A.

The 27-year-old Matthes has been assigned to Minor League camp and will begin the 2014 season at Triple-A Sacramento.
