Orioles acquire minor league RHP Joe Gunkel from Boston

The Orioles today announced that they have acquired minor league RHP Joe Gunkel from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for OF Alejandro De Aza and cash considerations.

Gunkel, 23, owns a career record of 12-7 with a 3.05 ERA in 54 appearances (20 starts) over three minor league seasons while fanning 178 over 165.0 innings. He combined to go 3-2 with a 2.90 ERA (13 ER/40.1 IP) between Single-A (Advanced) Salem and Double-A Portland while striking out 44 batters. The Hershey, Pennsylvania native was selected in the 18th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft by the Red Sox out of West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He will be assigned to Double-A Bowie.

De Aza, 31, combined to hit .249 (46-for-185) with nine doubles, six home runs, and 17 RBI over parts of two seasons with the Orioles. This season, De Aza hit .214 (22-for-103) with three home runs and seven RBI.
