Orioles send Wright to DL with calf strain
Right-hander Rondon called up to take spot in bullpen
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles placed Mike Wright on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain prior to Saturday's game, recalling reliever Jorge Rondon in his place.
Wright exited Friday's game in the top of the fifth inning with what was initially called a calf cramp, but it was deemed serious enough to warrant an MRI on Saturday.
"I was trying to downplay it into a cramp so I could keep pitching," said Wright, who was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in a flurry of Trade Deadline moves Friday. "Now, it's a 15-day DL. Hopefully it's no longer than that and I'll come back soon.
"There was some swelling and I guess blood from wear and tear. So, [it's] a Grade 2 strain."
Wright said he was given a recovery timetable of two to four weeks. He will fly to Sarasota, Fla., on Sunday, along with Steve Pearce -- on the DL for an oblique strain -- to continue the rehab process.
Rondon, 27, was 2-1 with a 2.01 ERA over 40 1/3 innings (24 games) with Triple-A Norfolk this season. The right-hander was claimed off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on May 10 and will wear No. 57 with the Orioles.
