O's tab prep outfielder Hart with pick No. 37
HOUSTON -- The Orioles selected prep outfielder Josh Hart with the 37th overall pick, the fourth selection in the First-Year Player Draft's Competitive Balance Round A.
Hart, out of Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga., is a center fielder who helped lead Parkview to a fourth straight region championship and a berth in the Class AAAAAA state semifinals by hitting .449, with five home runs, 29 RBIs, 39 runs scored and 33 stolen bases this spring.
"[Hart is] a dynamic player," said O's scouting director Gary Rajsich. "It's just a matter of time before he gets bigger and stronger. He's ready to go."
The 18-year-old Hart , who has committed to Georgia Tech, is a gap-to-gap hitter with average speed and listed at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds. An athletic high school talent, Hart joins first-rounder Hunter Harvey (right-hander pitcher) and second-rounder Chance Sisco (catcher) to give the Orioles a trio of promising prep prospects in a Minor League system that has graduated most of its top-tier guys.
Hart is the latest selection to come out of Parkview, the alma mater of previous top First-Year Player Draft prospects like Matt Olson in 2012, Brandon Jacobs in '09 and Jeff Francoeur in '02.
The speedster is an outstanding athlete who reminds some of a Denard Span- or Ben Revere-type player who can become a tablesetter atop a big league lineup in the future.
