Padres acquire LHP Alex Torres and RHP Jesse Hahn in seven-player trade with Tampa Bay Rays

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Alex Torres and right-handed pitcher Jesse Hahn from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for infielders Logan Forsythe and Maxx Tissenbaum and right-handed pitchers Matt Andriese, Brad Boxberger and Matt Lollis.   Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
 
Torres, 26, made 39 relief appearances over two stints with Tampa Bay this past season, his rookie campaign, going 4-2 with a 1.71 ERA (11 ER, 58.0 IP), 62 strikeouts against 20 walks and a .159 (32-for-201) opponent batting average. His 1.71 ERA led all qualifying Major League rookie relief pitchers (minimum 50 IP) while his .159 opponent batting average ranked third-best. The southpaw began the 2013 season with Triple-A Durham, posting a 2-2 record with a 3.52 ERA (18 ER, 46.0 IP), 61 strikeouts against 21 walks and a .200 (34-for-170) opponent batting average over nine starts. Originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as a non-drafted free agent on January 10, 2005, the Venezuelan native was acquired by the Rays along with infielders Sean Rodriguez and Matt Sweeney in exchange for left-handed pitcher Scott Kazmir on August 28, 2009. Over parts of two Major League seasons with Tampa Bay (2011, 2013), Torres is 5-3 with a 1.91 ERA (14 ER, 66.0 IP), 71 strikeouts against 27 walks, a .172 (40-for-232) opponent batting average and just one home run allowed over 43 relief appearances. In his big league career, lefties are batting .179 against him with just four extra-base hits (all doubles) and striking out 35% of the time (36 Ks in 104 plate appearances).
 
Hahn, 24, spent the majority of last season with Single-A Charlotte, making 20 starts total and going 2-1 with a 2.09 ERA (16 ER, 69.0 IP), 67 strikeouts against 18 walks, a .224 (59-for-263) opponent batting average and just one home run allowed. Signed by the Rays as a sixth-round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Virginia Tech University, the right-hander was named a Florida State League All-Star in 2013. Hahn missed the entire 2011 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Since making his professional debut for the Rays in 2012, Hahn has gone 4-3 with a 2.38 ERA (32 ER, 121.0 IP), 122 strikeouts against 33 walks, a .214 (97-for-454) opponent batting average and just one home run allowed over 34 career starts.
 
Forsythe, 27, hit .214 (47-for-220) with six doubles, one triple, six home runs, 19 RBI, 22 runs scored and six stolen bases over 75 games for San Diego last season. The infielder was signed by the Padres as a supplemental-round selection (46th overall) in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas. Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Padres (2011-13), he has hit .241 (165-for-685) with 28 doubles, five triples, 12 home runs, 57 RBI, 79 runs scored and 17 stolen bases in 228 games played.
 
Boxberger, 25, made 18 relief appearances for San Diego in 2013, going 0-1 with a save, a 2.86 ERA (7 ER, 22.0 IP) and 24 strikeouts against 13 walks. The right-hander also made 42 relief appearances for Triple-A Tucson this past season, going 2-4 with a 3.61 ERA (23 ER, 57.1 IP) and 89 strikeouts against 19 walks. Boxberger was acquired by the Padres along with infielder Yonder Alonso, catcher Yasmani Grandal and right-handed pitcher Edinson Volquez from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mat Latos on December 17, 2011.
 
Tissenbaum, 22, hit .277 (115-for-415) with 28 doubles, two home runs, 49 RBI, 48 runs scored and four stolen bases in 111 games for Single-A Fort Wayne in 2013. The left-handed hitter was signed by the Padres as an 11th-round selection in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Stony Brook University (NY).
 
Andriese, 24, split this past season between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson, going 11-7 with a 3.27 ERA (49 ER, 134.2 IP) and 105 strikeouts against 29 walks over 27 games, 25 starts. The right-hander was signed by the Padres as a third-round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of California, Riverside.
 
Lollis, 23, made 58 relief appearances last season between Single-A Lake Elsinore, Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson, compiling a 3-8 record with a 4.62 ERA (38 ER, 74.0 IP) and 63 strikeouts against 39 walks. The right-hander was signed by the Padres as a 15th-round selection in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Riverside Community College (CA).
