Padres acquire RHP Cory Mazzoni from the New York Mets in exchange for LHP Alex Torres

Padres also receive a player to be named later

PEORIA, AZ - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later from the New York Mets in exchange for left-handed pitcher Alex Torres. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.

Mazzoni, 25, pitched to a combined 7-2 record with a 4.68 ERA (40 ER, 77.0 IP) and 75 strikeouts against 20 walks in 14 games, all starts, across four minor league levels in 2014, with nine starts for Triple-A Las Vegas. Originally signed by New York as a second-round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of North Carolina State University, the right-hander owns a career 24-12 record with a 4.11 ERA (137 ER, 300.1 IP) and 271 strikeouts against 78 walks in 65 games, 53 starts, over parts of four minor league seasons, all in the Mets organization.  

Torres, 27, went 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA (20 ER, 54.0 IP) and 51 strikeouts against 33 walks in 70 relief appearances in his first season with the Padres last year. Originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, the Valencia, Venezuela native owns a career 7-4 record with a 2.55 ERA (34 ER, 120.0 IP) and 122 strikeouts against 60 walks over 113 games, all in relief, over parts of three Major League seasons with the Rays (2011, 2013) and Padres (2014).
