Maybin to have surgery Friday on wrist

SAN DIEGO -- After dealing with a troublesome right wrist for the past two seasons, Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin will have surgery on it Friday.

"It's time to get it done," Maybin said Wednesday.

Because of an impingement to the wrist and a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Maybin's 2013 season has consisted of just 14 games.

"It's been a rough one," Maybin said.

As his knee continues to heal, Maybin was hoping his wrist would also heal during the period of inactivity while on the disabled list. But a scan two days ago showed some damage to two ligaments and calcium deposits in the wrist. The surgery will also smooth over the wrist joint, Maybin said.

"It's good to finally get an idea of what we're dealing with," Maybin said. "It's unfortunate, but this gives me the time to get ready for next year. And this [surgery] doesn't seem like a serious process."

Maybin is still holding out hope of getting some at-bats this winter, though the surgery could push that possibility back to December.

"I really want to get some at-bats," he said. "But there's no benefit to beating myself up over it. It wasn't like my body was breaking down. Things happen you can't control."
