Padres draft bench coach Renteria's son

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres grabbed a familiar face with their 39th-round Draft pick Wednesday, selecting Anthony Renteria, son of San Diego bench coach Rick Renteria, with the 1,185th overall pick.

The younger Renteria, an outfielder at Cal State San Marcos, was drafted by the Padres in the 32nd round of the 2007 Draft before opting to head to college. He hit .331 with a .630 slugging percentage and 12 home runs in 2012. A product of Great Oak High School in Temecula, Calif., Anthony Renteria is one of four children who grew up in Temecula as their father climbed the Padres' coaching ranks.

"You look for guys down in the Draft that have a chance to overachieve; he's one of those guys," said Padres vice president and assistant general manager for personnel Chad MacDonald. "He's a baseball guy who can play all three outfield positions, comes from a baseball family and baseball bloodlines -- he fits the bill."

The elder Renteria has been in the Padres' organization since 2003, when he began his tenure with the organization as a coach with Class A Lake Elsinore. He is in his fifth season as a coach with the Padres, second on the bench. The Harbor City, Calif., native was a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1980 Draft. He went on to play 184 Major League games with the Pirates, Mariners, and Marlins.
