Black successfully challenges call vs. Angels

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Bud Black sprung from the chair in front of the home dugout Friday to challenge a call on a close play at first base in the fifth inning -- and the Padres' manager was rewarded for doing so.

Matt Long of the Angels nearly turned a bunt into a single, as he was ruled safe after Padres pitcher Eric Stults' underhand throw to first baseman Xavier Nady was deemed late.

Black protested briefly and challenged the call, which was overturned as Long was ruled out.

It marked the first time both teams were able to use the "Hawk-Eye" replay system. The Hawk-Eye is a camera-based technology that is used in tennis. On Friday, Black was able to quickly confer with members of the Padres' baseball operations, who reviewed the play and advised Black that he should challenge the call.

It was the second time this spring the Angels had an overturned call go against them. The previous overturned call came in a game against the Mariners.

The play disallowed a baserunner for the Angels, who were trailing, 3-1, at the time. The Padres upped their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning when Jedd Gyorko hit a home run, and they won the game, 4-2.
