Black's first challenge overturns call at second

SAN DIEGO -- Padres manager Bud Black lodged the first official replay request in club history in the eighth inning against the Tigers on Saturday -- sort of -- and happily stepped into the record books with a successful appeal that most likely saved a run.

The request came with one out in the eighth, Detroit's Nick Castellanos on second and one out. Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal fired a pickoff throw to second with Alex Avila at the plate, and shortstop Everth Cabrera appeared to receive it in time to tag Castellanos out.

When second-base umpire Mike Winters called Castellanos safe, Black came out and quickly asked for a review. The call was overturned, and Castellanos was called out.

Avila immediately followed with a single up the middle that surely would have scored Castellanos.

"It was a critical point in the game, 4-2, with a guy at second base in the eighth inning," Black said. "We're no different than any other team. We have guys," dedicated to watching replays.

Though it was Black's first official challenge, it wasn't the first time he attempted to appeal. Against the Dodgers in San Diego on April 2, Black attempted to appeal a call when Yasiel Puig beat out a first-inning bunt single.

But crew chief Fieldin Culbreth said time had run out -- that Black had waited too long -- and would not allow the appeal.
