Padres Sign INF Clint Barmes to One-Year Contract With Club Option for 2016
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have agreed to terms with infielder Clint Barmes on a one-year contract for the 2015 season with a club option for the 2016 season. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
Barmes, 35, pronounced BAR-miss, hit .245 (25-for-102) with five doubles, seven RBI and 15 runs scored in 48 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014. A native of Vincennes, Ind., the right-handed hitter was originally selected in the 10th-round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft by the Colorado Rockies. Over parts of 12 Major League seasons with the Rockies (2003-2010), Houston Astros (2011) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2012-14) he has hit .246 (884-for-3598) with 194 doubles, 16 triples, 86 home runs, 399 RBI and 410 runs scored.
Defensively, Barmes has made 730 career appearances at shortstop, 320 games at second base, 17 games at third base, five games in center field, three games at first base and one game in right field. Since his first full Major League season in 2006, the Indiana State University product leads all qualifying Major League players with a .854 zone rating at shortstop (minimum 540 games). Over that same span, his .973 fielding percentage at shortstop ranks sixth-best in the National League.
