Padres sign right-handed pitcher Josh Johnson to a one-year contact for 2014

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres announced today that the club signed right-handed starting pitcher Josh Johnson to a one-year Major League contract for 2014. A corresponding 40-man roster move will be announced once the signing in confirmed by Major League Baseball. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement. 

Johnson, 29, is a two-time National League All-Star (2009 and 2010) and has compiled a 58-45 record with a 3.40 ERA over 170 games (160 starts) with the Florida/Miami Marlins (2005-2012) and Toronto Blue Jays. Johnson placed fifth in the N.L. Cy Young Award voting in 2010 after winning the ERA title with a 2.30 mark and recording an 11-6 record in 28 starts for the Marlins. In the three seasons between 2010 and 2012, his cumulative ERA of 2.87 was the fourth-best in baseball. Since 2006, his first full season in the Majors, Johnson has allowed just 0.68 home runs-per-nine-innings, the fifth-best mark in baseball.

The 6-foot-5, 251-pounder posted a 2-8 record with a 6.20 ERA in 16 starts for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2013, his only season in the American League. Johnson battled triceps and forearm injuries throughout the campaign, but ended up striking out 83 batters in 81.1 innings, a career-best 9.18 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., Johnson graduated from Jenks High School in Oklahoma and currently resides with his family in Las Vegas, Nev. He was the Florida Marlins fourth-round selection in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
