ICYMI: Padres' hit parade rains down in rout

Tuesday night's pitchers' duel between Colin Rea and Jon Gray was nothing but a distant memory on Wednesday as the Padres and Rockies combined for 28 hits and 15 runs in the third game of their four-game set. San Diego opened Wednesday's contest by scoring in the first three consecutive innings while rallying for even more later on as the Padres completed an 11-4 rout of Colorado. Starter James Shields earned his 11th win of the season, while Chris Rusin suffered his first career loss to San Diego and fell to an 5-8 record on the year.

Shields was not at his sharpest, surrendering four earned runs on eight hits and four walks through six innings. Shields also recorded six strikeouts against the Rockies, bringing his season total to just six shy of the 200 mark. Shields needed 111 pitches to get through six, and he was effective in helping his cause after he collected his second RBI of the season on a bases loaded walk in the second inning.

After Shields departed, Bud Norris, Marcos Mateo and Odrisamer Despaigne delivered three scoreless innings to preserve the Padres' seven run lead. Norris collected a pair of strikeouts and did not surrender a hit, and nor did Mateo.

Outfielder Matt Kemp went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs, bringing his RBI total to 93 for the season while also extending his on-base streak to 29 games. Kemp's active streak is the longest by a Padres player in nine years, and the longest since Adrian Gonzalez reached base safely in 30 straight games. Kemp also collected his 20th homer of the season in the first inning.

Infielder Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a three-run shot in the third inning to extend the Padres' lead. With his 14th homer of the season, Gyorko increased his RBI total to 49 on the year. Derek Norris, Melvin Upton Jr., Yangervis Solarte and Wil Myers all enjoyed multihit games as well, as Myers and Solarte each went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Norris also recorded his 30th double of the season and his 10th double off a Rockies pitcher.

Pinch-hitters Alexi Amarista and Alex Dickerson each collected base knocks, and Tuesday night's star pitcher in Colin Rea even got involved as he pinch-ran for Dickerson and came around to score in the sixth inning. Clint Barmes also recorded a base knock and run-scored after coming off the bench.
