Phillies Announce Managerial Change
The Philadelphia Phillies have announced a managerial change effective with tonight's 7:05 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, replacing Charlie Manuel with third base coach Ryne Sandberg.
Manuel, 69, has spent the last nine seasons (2005-13) at the helm of the Phillies and went 780-636 (.551), managing the club to more wins than any other manager in franchise history. From 2007-11, the club won five consecutive National League East Division titles, two NL pennants and a World Series championship. Also in that timeframe, the Phillies posted the best record in the NL (473-337) and second-best record, overall, in Major League Baseball, trailing the New York Yankees (478-332) by only five games. In the postseason, Manuel's Phillies teams posted a 27-19 (.587) record.
This past Monday, Manuel became the 59th manager in major league history to notch 1,000 wins.
Prior to being named manager for the 2005 season, Manuel spent two years (2003-04) working for the Phillies as a special assistant to then-GM Ed Wade.
With Sandberg replacing Manuel for the remainder of the 2013 season, Juan Samuel will assume third base coaching duties and Wally Joyner will become the first base coach.
