Phillies have four players file for salary arbitration

Revere, Kendrick, Bastardo, Mayberry set to exchange figures with club Friday

The salary arbitration process officially began Tuesday with four Phillies players -- outfielders Ben Revere and John Mayberry, as well as pitchers Antonio Bastardo and Kyle Kendrick -- filing for arbitration.

The Phils' quartet was among the 146 players across the big leagues to file for arbitration ahead of Tuesday's deadline.

On Friday, the two sides will exchange salary proposals for one-year contracts. Negotiations then will continue until either a deal is reached or the arbitration hearing arrives. Hearings will be scheduled this year from Feb. 1-21.

Arbitration-eligible players are generally those with at least three years of Major League service but less than the six needed to qualify for free agency. A select group of players with between two and three years of service -- Super Twos -- can also qualify for arbitration.

If any of the cases continues through to an actual hearing, a three-member panel of judges will determine the player's salary. The panel will take into consideration the player's performance this past season, as well as the length and consistency of his career contribution, his "leadership and public appeal" and the recent performance of the team overall.

Revere, who made a base salary of $515,000 in 2013, was acquired from the Twins last offseason for Vance Worley and Minor Leaguer Trevor May. Revere, 25, got off to a sluggish start with the Phillies, hitting .200 in April with a .456 OPS, but he recovered to hit .347 with a .784 OPS over the next 65 games before a broken bone in his right ankle ended his season in July. Revere finished the year with a .305 average and 22 stolen bases in just 88 games.

Kendrick turned in double-digit victories for the fifth time in his six full big league seasons, all while earning $4.5 million in 2013. He went 10-13 with a 4.70 ERA while pitching a career-high 182 innings over 30 starts.

Bastardo, 28, had an impressive season cut short by a 50-game suspension for his connection to the Biogenesis scandal. Prior to the suspension, the lefty reliever posted a 2.32 ERA with a 3-2 record and a pair of saves over 48 appearances.

Mayberry, 30, started 89 games for the Phils last season, including 84 in the outfield. However, Philadelphia added veteran Marlon Byrd this offseason with the hopes of having Byrd patrol the outfield alongside Revere and Domonic Brown. Mayberry last season hit .227 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs.
