Pirates designate Worley for assignment

Pittsburgh creates roster space to add veteran righty Blanton

In order to clear room on the 25-man roster for new acquisition Joe Blanton, the Pirates designated right-hander Vance Worley for assignment on Thursday.

In his second season with Pittsburgh, Worley was 4-5 with a 3.78 ERA in 20 appearances (eight starts).

The Pirates, who acquired Blanton from Kansas City, say the veteran right-hander will be activated for Thursday's game vs. Cincinnati. Blanton has a 3.89 ERA this season, having spent most of it as the Royals' long reliever.
