Pirates, Marlins swap righty prospects
Bucs acquire touted hurler Williams, Miami gets 20-year-old Mitchell
PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates acquired Minor League right-hander Trevor Williams from the Marlins on Saturday in exchange for right-hander Richard Mitchell.
Williams, 23, was the Marlins' No. 5 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com. He went 7-10 with a 3.85 ERA while spending most of last season at Double-A. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound hurler advanced to Triple-A in only his third professional season, going 0-2 with a 2.57 ERA in three starts for New Orleans.
A second-round pick out of Arizona State University in the 2013 Draft, Williams has put together a career 15-19 record and 3.35 ERA in the Minors.
Williams' arsenal of pitches includes a fastball, slider, curveball and changeup, and his ability to induce ground-ball outs and limit home runs fits the Pirates' pitching profile.
Mitchell, 20, went 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 appearances for the Gulf Coast League Pirates last year, his first season in the United States after three in the Dominican Summer League. The native of Colombia is 15-9 with a 3.96 ERA in 56 career appearances, including 14 starts.
