Power of the 'Stache

At this time of the year, most teams will do whatever they can to get an edge on their competition. This is especially true for teams that are in tight Postseason races. However, some late-season superstitions do not look or feel that good.

After suffering a 3-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals last week, Chicago White Sox sluggers Adam Dunn and Paul Konkerko shaved of their mustaches that they had been sporting for about two and a half weeks. What started as a tribute to the late Chicago White Sox’s pregame instructor Kevin Hickey became something that brought the clubhouse together. Furthermore, as uncomfortable and annoying as the new facial hair was for the players, they would not dare change it. It seemed to be a good luck charm.

In late September, nothing is more important to a team trying to make the Postseason than simply winning games. Winning streaks are obviously welcomes as well, and the White Sox had won an impressive five games in a row while maintaining their crumb catchers.

The White Sox seem to be in a great position to make the Postseason, and this recent push will have a lot to do with that. However, it will be interesting to see what they will do if they start struggling again. We might witness a return of the ‘stache!
