Berry earns spot on Cubs' NLCS roster

Speedy outfielder replaces injured shortstop Russell

NEW YORK -- The Cubs added speedy outfielder Quintin Berry to their roster for the National League Championship Series in advance of Game 1 Saturday against the Mets (7:30 p.m. ET on TBS).

Berry replaces rookie shortstop Addison Russell, who is sidelined with a moderate strain of his left hamstring after suffering the injury in Game 3 of the NL Division Series. The Cubs did not want Russell to risk re-aggravating his leg if he tried to hurry his rehab in time for the NLCS. Javier Baez, who was on the NL Wild Card and NLDS rosters, will start at shortstop in place of Russell.

The Cubs signed Berry to a Minor League contract on Aug. 24, and he joined the team in September, appearing in eight games. A left-handed hitter, he was caught stealing for the first time in his career Sept. 20 by the Cardinals. Berry has played for the Tigers, Red Sox and Orioles, and he has playoff experience -- getting to the World Series in 2012 with Detroit and again in '13 with Boston.
