Rangers acquire LHP Travis Blackley from Houston for cash considerations

The Texas Rangers have acquired left-handed pitcher Travis Blackley from the Houston Astros in exchange for cash considerations. Blackley, who was outrighted by the Astros on Saturday, will not be on the 40-man roster and has been assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Blackley, 30, has spent the entire season in the Houston organization after being designated for assignment by Oakland at the end of spring training. He was acquired by the Astros in a trade with the A's on April 4 and opened the year on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain. After a one-outing injury rehabilitation assignment with Oklahoma City (AAA), Blackley was reinstated from the disabled list and was on the Astros active roster from April 20-Aug. 8. He was designated for assignment on Friday and outrighted to Oklahoma City on Saturday, but did not appear for the RedHawks.

Blackley has gone 1-1 with a 4.89 ERA (19 ER/35.0 IP) in 42 relief appearances for the Astros this season, allowing 10 home runs and 20 walks against 29 strikeouts. He has allowed 7 of 37 inherited runners to score (18.9%). Opponents batted just .234 (30-128), including a .200 (12-60) figure by left-handed hitters. For his big league career, Blackley has held lefties to a .231 (49-212) mark. The Australia native is 8-8 with a 5.28 ERA (104 ER/177.1 IP) over 78 games/23 starts in his major league career with Seattle (2004), San Francisco (2007, 2012), Oakland (2012), and Houston (2013). Of Blackley's 8 career wins, 2 have come at Rangers Ballpark and 4 have been against Texas.
