Rangers place Corporan on DL, recall Telis

HOUSTON -- The Rangers placed catcher Carlos Corporan on the disabled list on Friday due to his sprained left thumb, and they recalled Tomas Telis from Triple-A Round Rock to serve as the backup to Robinson Chirinos.

Corporan originally injured the thumb on the Rangers' last road trip to Baltimore, and he aggravated it during Thursday's workout at Minute Maid Park. He is batting .178 with three homers and 15 RBIs in 33 games, including 30 starts, at catcher this season.

Telis has spent the entire season at Round Rock, batting .291 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 70 games. He leads with Express with 43 runs and 82 hits, and he has thrown out 27 of 56 runners (48.2 percent) trying to steal. As a switch-hitter, Telis has made 50 starts at catcher, 17 at designated hitter and three at first base.

Telis hit .250 with eight RBIs in 18 games in his Major League debut with the Rangers in 2014. He went 0-for-2 in Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star Game in Omaha, Neb.
