Rangers purchase contract of 1b Carlos Pena from Round Rock, designate 1b/of Brad Snyder for assignment

Pena made his MLB debut with Texas in 2001

The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has purchased the contract of first baseman Carlos Pena (#21) from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room on both the active and 40-man rosters for Pena, the club has designated first baseman/outfielder Brad Snyder for assignment.

Pena, 36, was signed to a minor league contract on June 17 and batted .333 (8-24) with one home run, one double, and 2 RBI over 7 games with Round Rock. He made 5 starts at first base and 2 as the designated hitter. He went 0-for-4 last night versus Fresno to snap a 6-game hit streak at Triple-A. He was in spring training with the Los Angeles Angels after signing with that club as a minor league free agent on January 28. He batted .139 (5-26) with no homers and 2 RBI in 20 spring games with the Angels before he was released on March 23.

The Rangers originally signed Pena after selecting him in the first round (10th overall) of the 1998 June draft. He made his major league debut with the Rangers in 2001 before he was traded to Oakland that offseason. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the only player with at least 12 years between games for the Washington/Texas franchise was Sammy Sosa. Pena has 285 career home runs and owns 6 different seasons of 25-or-more, including a career-high 46 homers with Tampa Bay in 2007. An All-Star in 2009, he has also won a Gold Glove Award (2008) and Silver Slugger Award (2007).

The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Snyder to the minor leagues. Snyder had his contract purchased from Round Rock on June 10 and batted .167 (5-30) with 2 home runs and 3 RBI in 10 games with Texas.

With today's moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
