Rangers to host QB Wilson in camp Monday

The Rangers will add a player with championship pedigree to their Spring Training roster Monday as Super Bowl-champion quarterback Russell Wilson is scheduled to join the club in Surprise, Ariz.

Wilson, whose Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII earlier this month, is expected to participate in the Rangers' workout Monday morning before suiting up for their 1:05 p.m. MT/2:05 p.m. CT game against Cleveland at Surprise Stadium.

This isn't Wilson's first foray into professional baseball. The former infielder was originally drafted by Colorado in the fourth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. He spent two years in the Rockies' Minor League system before moving on from baseball to play his final collegiate football season at Wisconsin.

While with the Rockies, Wilson batted .229 with five homers and 26 RBIs through 93 games with short-season Class A Tri-City and Class A Asheville.

Wilson was selected by Texas from Colorado in the Triple-A phase of the MLB Rule 5 Draft in December 2013. While the Rangers never expected Wilson to forfeit his football career, manager Ron Washington said last week that he believed there were benefits to having a championship player involved in the organization.

"The guy has had a lot of success and he has a championship attitude," Washington said. "We're going to give him a chance to talk to our young kids and see what happens. Maybe [shortstop Elvis Andrus] and some of those young guys can hang with him and see what he has to offer."
