Rays-Phils postponed; Shields to start Saturday

PHILADELPHIA -- After a lengthy delay, Friday night's Rays-Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park was postponed due to inclement weather.

Friday night's game was scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. ET, but never got started. The news of the postponement finally came at 9:53 p.m.

The game will be rescheduled as part of a day-night, separate admission doubleheader on Sunday.

The regularly scheduled 1:35 p.m. game on Sunday will now begin at 1:05 p.m. The second game, which is the Friday makeup, will begin at 6:35 p.m.

James Shields, who was scheduled to start Friday night, will start Saturday afternoon's contest.

Shields said he backed off a little bit while warming up prior to the start of the game, figuring the game would be called. He did not anticipate making his start on Saturday being a problem.

"I've still got a lot of bullets in the old brazo [arm]," Shields said.

Alex Cobb and David Price will start Sunday, but the order they will pitch has not yet been decided.

Cliff Lee was scheduled to start for the Phillies on Friday night, but he will not start Saturday. Kyle Kendrick will start for the Phillies, as originally scheduled. The Phillies have not yet announced their starters for Sunday, but speculation suggests Lee and Cole Hamels will get the starts.

The Rays and Phillies fought inclimate weather during the 2008 World Series, prompting Rays manager Joe Maddon to show an ironic smile before remarking about Friday night's weather and the weather they experienced in Philadelphia during that Fall Classic.

"It's just uncanny," Maddon said.
