DeJesus on DL with broken hand; Guyer activated

Left fielder suffers injury on check swing, will wear cast for three weeks

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays placed left fielder David DeJesus on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a left hand fracture sustained on a check swing Wednesday against the Orioles.

"It's crazy. It was just a random swing," DeJesus said. "My last at-bat [Wednesday], last swing, it was up and away, tried to come around it, missed it, and I was walking back to the dugout with my head down, in pain."

The injury is an avulsion fracture on DeJesus' left ring finger, which means the ligament attached to his finger was pulled loose from the bone. It is a non-displaced avulsion fracture, a type of fracture that often heals well on its own.

"I knew something was up because it was so tender to touch," DeJesus said. "When things are touch-sensitive, I think that's when you know something's wrong."

DeJesus was wearing a splint in the clubhouse Thursday, and he said he will be wearing one for about the next three weeks before he is reevaluated. He will have his middle and ring fingers taped together to keep the ligament in place.

DeJesus said he didn't know that much about the type of fracture, but added, "I know that I'm not allowed to move my hand. I'm going be in this for a while."

To replace DeJesus, the Rays activated left fielder Brandon Guyer, who had been rehabbing a broken left thumb at Triple-A Durham.

Guyer said Thursday that his thumb was fully healthy -- no pain, no soreness.

"It's completely fine," Guyer said. "I don't have to tape it or anything anymore. It's 100 percent right now."

Guyer was 8-for-20 (.400) in five games for Durham. He was 4-for-4 with two triples Wednesday starting at designated hitter and batting leadoff.

"The first couple of games were a little interesting -- you know, timing and everything, picking up all the pitches," Guyer said. "But after I saw some more pitches and got into my groove, I started playing the way I know I can, and hopefully I can bring that up here."
