Gomes clears waivers, accepts assignment

ST. PETERSBURG -- Brandon Gomes cleared waivers and has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham with a Major League invite to Spring Training.

The Rays designated for assignment the right-hander on Friday to clear room on their 40-man roster.

Gomes split the 2014 season between the Rays and Durham, appearing in 29 Major League games over three stints with the Rays.

Gomes made six appearances of at least two innings, and five of those were scoreless. On April 26 against the White Sox, he tied his career high with three innings pitched, retiring all eight batters on 29 pitches, including a ground-ball double play.

Gomes was acquired by the Rays along with infielder Cole Figueroa, left-hander Cesar Ramos and right-hander Adam Russell in the Dec. 17, 2010, trade with the Padres.

Gomes is 9-6 with a 4.17 ERA in 110 Major League games, all with the Rays.
