Rays acquire Krauss from Angels for Winkler

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays did not play on Thursday, but the front office didn't rest as it pulled the trigger on a deal with the Angels to acquire first baseman/outfielder Marc Krauss for Minor League right-hander Kyle Winkler.

Krauss will be selected to the Major League roster for Friday night's game against the Red Sox. To make room for Krauss, Nick Franklin was optioned to Triple-A Durham.

"Marc is a disciplined hitter who brings left-handed power to our club," said Rays vice president of baseball operations Erik Neander. "He's a good fit for our present roster and we expect him to help us against right-handed pitching, primarily at first base."

The 6-foot-2 Krauss, 27, bats left-handed and throws right-handed, weighing in at 245 pounds.

In parts of three Major League seasons with the Astros and Angels, Krauss has hit .194 with 11 home runs, 39 RBIs and a .603 OPS. In 11 games for the Angels this season, he hit .143 with a home run, five RBIs and a .496 OPS.

Franklin, who was acquired in the three-way trade that sent David Price to the Tigers, is hitting .139 with one home run, three RBIs and a .455 OPS for the Rays this season.

"Nick's oblique injury in Spring Training interrupted his preparation for the season, and when he returned, our team's injuries forced him to learn a new position on the fly," Neander said. "He's young and talented and a big part of our future. Our goal is to make sure he is able to continue developing and get back on track, and we believe consistent playing time is the best way to achieve that."

Winkler, 25, is 12-14 with a 4.81 ERA in 115 career Minor League appearances. In 2015, he went 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA in seven relief appearances for Double-A Montgomery and 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three relief appearances for Durham.
