Red Sox acquire LHP Eduardo Rodriguez from Baltimore Orioles in exchange for LHP Andrew Miller

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today acquired minor league left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Rodriguez, 21, has spent this season with Double-A Bowie in the Orioles minor league system where he has gone 3-7 with a 4.79 ERA (44 ER/82.2 IP) with 69 strikeouts in 16 starts. This year he has held left-handed hitters to a .186 batting average (18-for-97) with just five extra-base hits, all doubles.

Entering the 2014 season, Baseball America rated Rodriguez as the No. 3 prospect in Baltimore's system, the No. 65 overall prospect in baseball, and the No. 6 left-handed pitching prospect. In 2013, the Venezuelan native appeared for the World Team at the 2013 MLB Futures Game at Citi Field in New York.

Signed by the Orioles as an international free agent on January 22, 2010, Rodriguez has gone 22-26 with a 3.45 ERA (172 ER/449.0 IP) with 379 strikeouts in 87 games (86 starts) all within the Baltimore organization (2010-14).

Miller, 29, is 3-5 with a 2.34 ERA (11 ER/42.1 IP) in 50 games for the Red Sox this season, all in relief. He has fanned 69 batters with just 13 walks and 25 hits allowed in 42.1 innings in 2014. The left-hander has allowed just two of 25 inherited runners to score (8.0%) and has paced Red Sox relievers in appearances, strikeouts, holds (13), and opponent batting average (.168). Acquired by Boston in November 2012, Miller has posted a 13-12 record with a 3.79 ERA (75 ER/178.1 IP) in 157 career games with the Red Sox over the past four seasons (12 starts), including a 2.93 ERA after converting to relief midway through the 2011 season. Miller is 28-38 with a 5.06 ERA (266 ER/472.2 IP) in 236 career big league outings, including 66 starts, between the Tigers (2006-07), Marlins (2008-10), and Red Sox.
