Red Sox activate outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury from 60-day disabled list; designate right-handed pitcher Justin Germano for assignment
BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today activated outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury from the 60-day disabled list and designated right-handed pitcher Justin Germano for assignment. Ellsbury is slated to start tonight’s game against the Rays at Tropicana Field, leading off and playing center field.
The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.
Ellsbury, 28, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 14 with a right shoulder subluxation and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 13. He appeared in eight rehab games, including four with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox and two each for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, combining to go 5-for-27 (.185) with two doubles, one home run, three RBI, five runs scored and four walks. The left-handed batter hit .192 (5-for-26) with two doubles, three RBI, four runs and four walks in seven games with Boston this season prior to the injury. Selected by the Red Sox in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, he has compiled a .299 career average (616-for-2,058) with 108 doubles, 23 triples, 52 home runs, 238 RBI, 345 runs and 175 stolen bases in 514 Major League games with the Red Sox over the last six seasons from 2007-12. The 2011 American League Comeback Player of the Year, Ellsbury finished second in AL MVP voting last season.
The 29-year-old Germano was selected to the Red Sox roster on July 4 and made one appearance for the club, with 5.2 scoreless innings of relief in a 6-1 loss to the Yankees on July 7 (Game 1). He went 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA (28 ER/105.0 IP) and 72 strikeouts in 17 games for Pawtucket this season, including 16 starts, and was named a mid-season International League All-Star. The right-hander has an 8-20 record with a 4.91 ERA (141 ER/258.2 IP) and 160 strikeouts in 80 career appearances (36 starts) over parts of seven Major League seasons with the Padres (2004, 2007-08), Reds (2006), Indians (2010-11) and Red Sox (2012).
