Red Sox Announce Personnel Moves in Baseball Operations

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today announced several personnel moves in the organization's baseball operations department.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcements.

Baseball Operations

Tom Tippett was named Senior Baseball Analyst after holding the position of Director of Baseball Information Services since November of 2008. The founder and former president of Diamond Mind Inc., Tippett has been affiliated with the Red Sox since 2003, when he began consulting with the club's baseball operations department. 

Greg Rybarczyk was hired as Baseball Operations Analyst. A native of Ayer, MA, Rybarczyk has published several baseball analytical articles for various media outlets, including ESPN.com and Hardball Times. Prior to joining the Red Sox, he consulted for several MLB teams, and operated Hit Tracker, now known as ESPN Home Run Tracker, since 2006. 

Dan Dyrek was promoted to Director, Sports Medicine Service after serving as Coordinator in 2013. Entering his third year with the Red Sox in 2014, Dyrek, a doctor of physical therapy, earned his degree summa cum laude from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Dr. Brian Busconi has been named Head Minor League Physician. An orthopedic surgeon affiliated with the UMass Memorial Medical Center, Busconi has been involved in the care of Red Sox minor league players since 1992.

Ray Mattfeld has been hired as Major League Physical Therapist. Prior to joining the Red Sox, Mattfeld, a native of Bay Shore, NY, worked in a private practice focusing in orthopedic and sports physical therapy for athletes at the professional, collegiate, and scholastic levels. A certified orthopedic clinical specialist and certified athletic trainer, Mattfeld is a graduate of SUNY Cortland. He obtained both a masters degree in physical therapy and a doctorate in physical therapy from Touro College (NY). 

Steve Sanders has been promoted to Coordinator, Amateur and International Scouting. In 2011, Sanders joined the Red Sox as an intern in baseball operations, and was hired full time in 2012 as Assistant, Amateur and International Scouting. Prior to joining the Red Sox, he interned in the Los Angeles Dodgers' baseball operations department in 2009 and 2010.

Mike Regan was promoted to Coordinator, Baseball Operations, after having served as Assistant, Baseball Operations from 2012-13. A 2008 graduate of Trinity College, Regan began his career at the Red Sox as a baseball operations intern in January of 2010.

Shawn O'Rourke has been promoted to Coordinator, Baseball Systems Development. Hired by the Red Sox as an IT department intern in 2007, O'Rourke has spent the last four seasons as Software Developer for the club. He is a 2008 graduate of Northeastern University.

Harrison Slutsky was hired as Assistant, Advance Scouting. After graduating from Columbia University in May of 2012, Slutsky served as an intern in baseball operations for the remainder of 2012, and through the 2013 season.

Player Development

Joe Oliver has been hired as manager for the Short-A Lowell Spinners. The former major league catcher spent eight of his 13 seasons in the big leagues with the Reds and helped Cincinnati win the 1990 World Series. Oliver, who concluded his playing career with the Red Sox in 2001, was most recently coaching varsity baseball at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, FL.

Paul Buchheit has been promoted to Head Minor League Medical Coordinator. Following stints as an intern for the Sarasota Red Sox in 2004 and the Lowell Spinners in 2005, Buchheit worked as athletic trainer for six seasons between different levels of Boston's minor league system, including Greenville (2006-08), Salem (2009), and Portland (2010-11). From 2012-13, he held the title of Athletic Training Coordinator.

Mauricio Elizondo was promoted to Latin American Medical Coordinator. In addition, Elizondo will continue to serve as Athletic Trainer for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. This year is his seventh season in the Red Sox organization.

Amateur Scouting

Tim Collinsworth has been hired as an Area Scout in North Texas and North Louisiana. Prior to joining the Red Sox, Collinsworth spent the last six years as an area scout in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. He is a graduate of Texas Christian University and was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team. 

Professional Scouting

Jaymie Bane has been promoted to Major League Scout after having served as a professional scout for Boston since 2007. The son of Eddie Bane, the club's Special Assistant to Player Personnel, Jaymie was a minor league pitching coach in the Blue Jays and White Sox organizations. During his playing career, the left-hander spent three seasons in the Angles system from 1997-99.

Les Walrond has been hired as a Professional Scout. A former left-handed pitcher with 16 seasons of professional experience, Walrond appeared in the majors with the Kansas City Royals (2003), Chicago Cubs (2006), and Philadelphia Phillies (2008). He also spent parts of his professional playing career in Korea and Japan.

International Scouting

Javier Hernandez has been promoted to Assistant Director of the Red Sox Dominican Academy. He began his tenure with the Red Sox in 2006 as an intern at the academy, and was hired full time in 2007. Since 2010, Hernandez had served as assistant to Jesus Alou, the director of the club's Dominican Academy.

Manuel Padron has been hired as a scout in Venezuela, and, in addition, will serve as Coordinator of Venezuelan scouting. After beginning his career as the video intern for the Lowell Spinners in 2012, Padron served as an intern in Boston's baseball operations department for the remainder of the 2012 season, and through 2013.

Rene Saggiadi has been hired as a scout assigned to Europe. Prior to joining the Red Sox, Saggiadi scouted in Europe for the Arizona Diamondbacks (2008-12) and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2013).
