Hanigan out until at least All-Star break

Red Sox catcher has surgery on right hand after getting hit by foul ball Friday

BOSTON -- Ryan Hanigan had his fractured right hand surgically repaired on Saturday, and Red Sox manager John Farrell doesn't expect his starting catcher back before the All-Star break.

"There were some pins inserted," said Farrell. "It's going to be a lengthy recovery time."

Blake Swihart, who made his Major League debut on Saturday in Boston's 4-2 loss to the Yankees, is expected to get most of the starts behind the plate.

It isn't clear yet if backup Sandy Leon will get more playing time with Hanigan out of the mix.

Hanigan suffered the injury off a ricochet on Friday night after Mark Teixeira was hit by a pitch.
