Red Sox hire journalist Edes to be club historian

For nearly two decades, journalist Gordon Edes has chronicled the Boston Red Sox -- first for The Boston Globe and then ESPNBoston.com. Edes is now ready to bring his "insider" knowledge of the club directly to the organization.

Fenway Sports Group announced Tuesday the hiring of Edes as its strategic communications advisor and Red Sox historian.

Edes will report directly to Red Sox owner John Henry, chairman Tom Werner and Mike Gordon, the president of Fenway Sports Group.

"I am deeply gratified and humbled by the good fortune of spending nearly four decades in journalism, especially serving a readership as loyal and discerning as followers of the Red Sox," said Edes. "I welcome the opportunity to apply my skill set and experience to serve Fenway Sports Group, and the Red Sox, in my new position."

The team historian role had been filled ably for many years by the late Dick Bresciani, who died last year.

"I am particularly honored to continue the work of the late Dick Bresciani as the club's team historian," said Edes. "I admire ownership's commitment to preserving the rich tradition of the team and Fenway Park, and look forward to enhancing the understanding of that history for a new generation of Red Sox fans."

Before making this career switch, Edes -- a native of Lunenburg, Mass. -- had served as a reporter for the past 35 years, working in Chicago, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale before coming home to Boston in 1996.
