Red Sox place right-handed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on 15-day disabled list
Recall first baseman Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled list with a right upper trapezius strain and recalled first baseman Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Gomez will be active for tonight’s game against the Athletics in Oakland, wearing No. 50.
The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.
For Matsuzaka, 31, this is his second stint on the disabled list in 2012. He began the year on the 15-day disabled list recovering from Tommy John Surgery and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 22. The right-hander was activated on June 9 and has made five starts with Boston, going 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA (17 ER/23.0 IP) and 20 strikeouts. Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent on December 14, 2006, he has a career 49-33 record with a 4.34 ERA (311 ER/645.2 IP) and 588 strikeouts in 111 Major League games (110 starts).
Gomez, 27, is in his second stint with the Red Sox this season. In his first Major League stint from May 13-20, the right-handed batter appeared in two games for Boston, going 0-for-2 at the plate. Named the starting designated hitter on this year’s International League All-Star team, he leads all Triple-A batters with 46 extra-base hits in 72 games with Pawtucket in 2012. He also ranks among International League leaders in batting average (3rd, .311, 87-for-280), doubles (T-1st, 26), home runs (T-3rd, 19), RBI (T-3rd, 55), slugging percentage (2nd, .614) and total bases (2nd, 172) while tallying a team-high 48 runs with a triple and 22 walks. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on February 2, Gomez is a career .277 hitter (893-for-3,220) with 218 doubles, 12 triples, 127 homers, 523 RBI, 455 runs scored and 222 walks in nine minor league seasons in the Rangers (2004-09), Braves (2010-11) and Red Sox (2012) systems.
