Series finale vs. Nationals postponed by rain

No makeup date has been announced

WASHINGTON -- The Reds' opportunity to get a season series sweep of the Nationals was put on hold Wednesday when their finale was postponed by rain. A makeup date has not been announced.

"It's a bad forecast and my understanding was [Tuesday] was the first day they didn't have rain here in a long time on the field," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "They just didn't think it could take this much more rain and still be playable. They were very communicative with me ahead of time that the weather and the field conditions might create this environment."

Michael Lorenzen was scheduled to start Wednesday's game and could very well be pushed back. It could cost David Holmberg a promotion, though. Holmberg was to be called up from Triple-A Louisville to start Thursday's series opener against the Marlins in Miami.

If Lorenzen is moved back a day, this would be the second time this season Holmberg saw a potential callup effectively wiped out by rain.

"We'll get together collectively and discuss our options," Price said. "There could be a lot of moving parts in this. A lot of things that may change because of this. We'll see."

There have been four postponements, 17 delays and one suspended game this season for the Reds because of rain. The delay times have totaled 21 hours, 40 minutes.

There is already makeup games scheduled vs. the Cubs -- a day-night doubleheader -- on July 22 at Great American Ball Park to account for an April 25 rainout. The Reds have a makeup vs. the Tigers, also at home, on Aug. 24 for a June 18 rainout. A May 8 rainout vs. the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field was rescheduled as a doubleheader the following day.
