Reds lose challenge, but win game-ending review
After out call at home stands, Cueto caps complete game on overturned play
CLEVELAND -- The Reds were hoping to bolster an already commanding lead in Tuesday night's 9-2 win over the Indians at Progressive Field, but an unsuccessful manager challenge kept an additional run off the board.
In the ninth inning, Kris Negron roped a bases-loaded triple to right that scored Todd Frazier and Ryan Ludwick to make it 9-2. Catcher Brayan Pena also came around third and slid into home plate, but umpire Greg Gibson ruled that Pena had been thrown out by Tribe shortstop Jose Ramirez.
Cincinnati manager Bryan Price challenged the play, and after review, the umpires ruled that the play would stand as called.
That wasn't the end of the replay story for the night, though, as the game ended after a safe call at first that was overturned by crew chief review.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, David Murphy looked to have beaten a throw to first for an infield single and was ruled safe. But Price asked for a crew chief review, as he was out of challenges. He was granted the request, and the call was overturned, giving Johnny Cueto a complete game.
