Reds Walk-Up Music Highlights

I ran across this updated list of the Reds at-bat music at the fantastic Better Off Red blog. We all know at-bat music is important and great and more telling as to whom you want on your team than any stat line (except OBP and WAR, duh). Here are a few of my favorites from the Reds’ list:

PITCHERS: Latos – “Set Fire to the Rain – Ember Waves Dubstep Remix” by Adele / “Typhoon” by Foreign Beggars

-I get the sense that baseball saved (or HELD BACK, depending on how you look at it) Mat Latos from being some tall, skinny, wild-eyed kid who punch-danced his way into getting kicked out of club after club every weekend throughout his 20’s. Also, he may still do that during the off-season. Good for him.

Leake – “Some Nights” by Fun

-Already a favorite of the Abercrombie-clad youngsters in the crowd, Leake is clearly aiming for that 14-20 year old demo. And he’s right on target!

LINEUP:

Choo – (null)

-I imagine Choo sprinting to the clubhouse with his newly purchased, still-in-the-cellophane copy of The Black Album screaming “99 Problems! 99PROBLEMS! 99 FREAKIN PROBLEMS COME ON WAAAAAAAAIT!!!!” and getting there just as they locked the door.

Phillips – “Showout” by Juicy J (start at :29) / “Go Get It” by T.I. (start at 1:17) / “We Still In this B****” by B.o.B. (start at :08) / “All Gold Everything” by Trinidad James (start at :29) / “I’m Different” by 2 Chainz (start at :29)

-Phillips is the only player with five songs (he’s the only one with more than two actually) and all of them have very specific start times. I have nothing to add to this other than Dat Dude knows how to make a walk-up song list.

Votto – “Paint it Black” by Rolling Stones (start from beginning)

-<>I’m sure Votto’s walk-up pick went like this: First at-bat of the season. Votto steps into the on-deck circle and a sweaty intern shouts from the bench, “Mr. Votto! Mister Votto! What song do you want to play when you go to bat?!” Votto stops in his tracks, turns slowly, with an icey glare, and through squinted eyes whispers loudly, “Paint it Black...start from the beginning.” Then he strides to the plate and hits a million home runs. Ultimate baller.

Bruce – “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (start at :17)

-Has a super infectious opening hook and a cool calm voice talking about how much money he’s got followed by Macklemore rapping who is about as hot as it gets right now. Perfect recipe for a solid Walk-up. Kudos.

Frazier – “You Make Me Feel So Young” by Frank Sinatra (start at 2:33) / “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra

Frazier’s gotten a lot of pub for walking up to Sinatra. KINDA seems like it MIGHT be pandering to all the geezers at Great American Ballpark, but I get it. “He’s a sweetheart” -- My Grandma
