Replay confirms out call at plate for Astros

White Sox lose challenge on close play in first inning

CHICAGO -- A manager's challenge requested by Robin Ventura on a first-inning play at the plate involving White Sox leadoff man Adam Eaton confirmed the original call of Eaton being out during Friday's game between the White Sox and Astros at U.S. Cellular Field.

Eaton opened the bottom of the first with a triple to right-center and tried to score on Alexei Ramirez's fly ball to right field. Houston right fielder Robbie Grossman put himself in perfect throwing position on the catch and fired a strike to catcher Jason Castro, with home-plate umpire Dan Bellino calling Eaton out.

Replays seemed to show Eaton beat the throw, with the crowd showing strong support during the replay process. But on further review, Eaton's foot was there in time but seemed to bounce over the plate and gave Castro the chance to tag him out.

With two outs in the fifth, Castro hit a long fly ball down the right-field line that was ruled foul as it just missed connecting with the bottom of the foul pole. After Astros manager Bo Porter asked for a crew chief review, the ruling on the field was confirmed, and Castro flew out to left field to end the inning.
