Replay review works extra time in Seattle

Mariners successfully challenge call; Rangers win one, lose one

SEATTLE -- There were two replay reviews in the first inning of Saturday's Mariners-Rangers game at Safeco Field. A call was overturned when Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon challenged a play at second base and the umpires also confirmed a pitch count on Adrian Beltre.

McClendon came out of the dugout to challenge after Leonys Martin was called safe at second base on what appeared to be a successful steal attempt. But replays showed that second baseman Robinson Cano had caught catcher John Buck's throw and tagged Martin on the helmet before he reached second base. Meanwhile, Elvis Andrus fanned on the pitch for the double play.

Later in the inning, crew chief Gerry Davis initiated a record keeping review to confirm a 2-2 count in the middle of Beltre'sat-bat. After a review, it was determined that the count was 2-2. Beltre later fanned to end the inning.

The Rangers had replay go against them in the bottom of the sixth inning. Joe Saunders was trying to protect a 3-1 while the Mariners had runners on first and second with two out. John Buck lined a single to center as Cano tried to score from second.

Rangers center fielder Martin made a strong throw but it was to the first-base side of home plate. Catcher Robinson Chirinos caught the ball, then dove after Cano as he tried to slide around the tag.

Home-plate umpire Alfonso Marquez signaled safe and, after a challenge by Rangers manager Ron Washington, his call was upheld by replay.

The Rangers did get a call overturned in the seventh. With two outs, Mariners reliever Joe Beimel picked off Andrus at first base and he was caught in a run down. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist ran him back to first and tagged Andrus as he dove into the bag.

First-base umpire Phil Cuzzi ruled out. Washington, who couldn't ask for a challenge, requested and was granted a review. This time the call was overturned and Andrus was ruled safe.
