MLB: No plans for Dodgers to open in Australia

SYDNEY -- Major League Baseball said Wednesday that it isn't currently in negotiations with the Los Angeles Dodgers or any team to open the 2014 season in Australia.

"We are not currently in negotiations with the Dodgers or any team to play in Australia," Major League Baseball spokesperson Pat Courtney said.

Australian promoters earlier said they were working on a deal that could have the Dodgers open with a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Local officials told the Sydney Morning Herald on Thursday that the series would attract up to 25,000 overseas tourists and generate $80 million for the New South Wales state economy.
