Lollis gets first hit in front of familiar faces

ST. LOUIS -- Ryan Lollis could be seen jawing with a fan in the Busch Stadium seats during the last inning of the Giants' 2-0 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Lollis wasn't trash talking; he was just saying hello to a former college teammate.

"He was just waving," Lollis said.

Lollis, a 37th-round Draft pick by the Giants in 2009 out of the University of Missouri, was playing in front of several former college teammates, coaches and family. Fittingly, the rookie got his first Major League hit with a drive to center in the eighth off Cardinals reliever Tyler Lyons.

"Finally to have a batting average, I guess you can consider I got the monkey off my back, right?" Lollis said. "And then we got the win, so it turned from a good day to a great day."

Lollis entered Wednesday batting .100 (1-for-10), but Giants manager Bruce Bochy hopes the hit will help settle him in. Bochy also conceded that Lollis' first few at-bats came in tough pinch-hitting roles.

"The first one sometimes can be the toughest one to get," Bochy said. "He's had some good at-bats and then he gets his first hit off a lefty, hung in there well. Kid has a swing that's going to work up here. It's a short swing, uses the whole field."

• Bochy wouldn't rule out righty Mike Leake (hamstring) starting this weekend in Pittsburgh. Leake was scheduled to start Tuesday, but the club wanted to give him a few more days. The Giants have not yet announced a starter for the series finale against the Pirates on Sunday.

• Bochy would be surprised if Joe Panik (back) returns before September. Panik is doing some throwing and running in Arizona, but Bochy described the process as slow.

Angel Pagan (right patella tendinitis) is expected to come off the disabled list when eligible Tuesday.

Nori Aoki (concussion) will be activated from the disabled list Friday. It is expected that Hunter Pence (oblique strain) will be added to the DL at that time.
