Gyorko named to Baseball America's rookie team

SAN DIEGO -- Second baseman Jedd Gyorko was named to Baseball America's 2013 Major League All-Rookie Team on Friday.

Gyorko is the third Padres player in franchise history to make the team. First baseman Yonder Alonso was selected last season and third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff made the team in 2007.

Gyorko hit .249 with 23 home runs and 63 RBIs in 125 games in his first Major League season. Gyorko led all Major League rookies in home runs and was second in RBIs, third in doubles (26) and fifth in hits (121).

Gyorko's totals might have been even better had he not missed 30 games after suffering a strained right groin in June.

His 23 home runs are the third most in Major League history by a rookie second baseman, trailing only Dan Uggla, who hit 27 for the Marlins in 2006 and Joe Gordon, who hit 25 for the Yankees in 1938.

Gyorko's home run total is the second most in club history by a rookie at any position and the most by a second baseman. He also led the team in RBIs. The only other rookie to lead the Padres in RBIs was Nate Colbert in 1969.

Defensively, Gyorko had a .992 fielding percentage, the best mark in Major League history among rookie second basemen. He had four errors, which was the fewest among those who qualified by playing a minimum of 108 games.
