Padres use fourth-rounder on outfielder Torres

The Padres continued to add position players on Friday when they selected outfielder Nick Torres with the 117th overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft.

Three of San Diego's first four picks in the Draft have been position players, starting with No. 13 overall selection, North Carolina State shortstop Trea Turner on Thursday.

Torres, who played at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, hit .322 with six home runs, 52 RBIs in a team-high 242 at-bats for the Mustangs, who were eliminated by Pepperdine in an NCAA Tournament regional last weekend.

In a 10-6 loss to the Waves in the regional final, Torres had two hits, including a home run, and knocked in three runs.

Torres had 19 doubles and seven home runs in 2013 and hit .333. At one point, he had an 18-game hitting streak.

Torres was recommended by Padres scout Brent Mayne, who spent 15 years catching in the big leagues.

"Torres is a physical, athletic right-handed-hitting slugger [from the] Carlos Quentin mold," Mayne said. "[He has] potential average power down the road, he's an average corner-outfield defender, average runner, plus arm and great makeup. He's a leader that plays hard with passion. [He's shown] consistent improvement every year since high school. He's a great addition to the Padres' organization."
