Giants avoid arbitration with Blanco, Petit, Abreu
Agreements reached on one-year contracts; figures exchanged with Belt, Arias
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants significantly trimmed their salary-arbitration to-do list Friday by agreeing to terms on one-year contracts with outfielder Gregor Blanco, right-hander Yusmeiro Petit and infielder Tony Abreu.
But the gap between Brandon Belt's salary request and the team's proposal for a one-year contract is sizable. Entering his first year of arbitration eligibility, Belt filed for $3.6 million, while the Giants countered with $2.05 million, according to figures obtained by Yahoo! Sports. Both significantly exceed Belt's 2013 salary of $531,500.
Yahoo! also reported that utility infielder Joaquin Arias, the other arbitration-eligible Giants player yet to compromise with the club before Friday's exchange of one-year proposals, is seeking $1.5 million. The Giants offered $1.1 million, exceeding the $925,000 that Arias earned last season.
Arbitration hearings will occur from Feb. 1-21 for players unable to settle with their respective clubs.
The Giants didn't announce financial details of the settlements for Abreu, Blanco and Petit. However, Sportsnet reported that Petit, who earned $500,000 last year, received an $845,000 base salary. The New York Post reported that Blanco's salary rose from $1.35 million to $2.525 million, while Abreu received $745,000, up from the $498,000 he earned last year.
