Rangers claim catcher Gimenez off waivers

Texas adds veteran, designates lefty Kirkman for assignment

SAN ANTONIO -- The Rangers have claimed catcher Chris Gimenez off waivers from the Athletics and designated left-handed pitcher Michael Kirkman for assignment. The Rangers have 10 days to trade Kirkman, release him or outright him to the Minors.

Gimenez was in camp with the Athletics and has spent parts of five seasons in the Majors with the Rays, Mariners and Indians. He has a career .199 batting average with a .292 on-base percentage and a .293 slugging percentage in 143 games.

Kirkman was out of options. He was 2-5 with a 5.17 ERA in 82 career appearances with the Rangers over the past four years. He had a 5.25 ERA this spring.

The Rangers also announced that pitcher Scott Baker has passed his physical and will join the rotation at Triple-A Round Rock.
