Time to see what moves Dodgers will make

SAN DIEGO -- The rest of baseball expects the Dodgers to make some noise at the Winter Meetings that open Monday, and Dodgers.com will be there to cover it.

The new management team has made moves for incremental improvement so far (the biggest acquisition is ageless reliever Joel Peralta), but it has been clear that moving at least one (highly paid) outfielder is a high priority.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports have had the Dodgers in the bidding for free-agent reliever Andrew Miller (who signed with the Yankees), starter Jon Lester (who is still weighing offers) and former catcher Russell Martin (who went home to play in Canada).

Adding a reliever and a starter were among the stated goals when president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Farhan Zaidi took over, while the biggest hole now is at shortstop after the free-agent departure of Hanley Ramirez.

The outfielder the Dodgers prefer to trade is Andre Ethier, who lost his starting job in 2014. Naturally, other clubs are pursuing Matt Kemp because of his huge second-half comeback, but Los Angeles is demanding a king's ransom for him.

After losing Ramirez, trading away Kemp would leave a second hole in the lineup unless the Dodgers got a hitter back for Kemp.

If the Dodgers don't get Lester, they could make runs at Max Scherzer or David Price to fill out an already loaded starting rotation.

Adding depth at catcher is another area to address. The club tendered a contract to starter A.J. Ellis, recently claimed Ryan Lavarnway from Boston and designated Drew Butera for assignment. Lavarnway and Tim Federowicz are out of options, as was Butera.

Manager Don Mattingly won't attend the Winter Meetings, as he's home in Indiana following the recent birth of his son.

The Rule 5 Draft will take place on Thursday morning.
