Gosewisch undergoes surgery to repair ACL

PHOENIX -- D-backs catcher Tuffy Gosewisch underwent surgery on Friday to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.

Gosewisch rejoined the club on Saturday, but will not accompany them on their upcoming three-city road trip against the Dodgers, Giants and Angels.

"He feels great," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "What they told us was there were no issues in the knee other than that, so that's good."

Hale is optimistic that Gosewisch will be an important resource to fellow catchers Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Welington Castillo, neither of whom are too familiar with the D-backs pitching staff.

Castillo was acquired in a trade with the Mariners on Wednesday and Saltalamacchia has been with the team for just more than a week.

"That's the tough part about coming into a new team, both guys, and learning the staff," Hale said. "You catch them once and all of a sudden you start to see something, but maybe it's going to take two, three times."

Worth noting

• D-backs hitting coach Turner Ward has temporarily left the club to deal with a personal matter. Minor league hitting coordinator Chris Cron was with the team on Saturday to work with assistant hitting coach Mark Grace.

• The D-backs plan to activate reliever David Hernandez (Tommy John surgery) from the disabled list on Sunday. Hale said the club will have to demote another reliever to make room for Hernandez on the roster.
