Two reviews in wild eighth inning favor Brewers

Howard's ground-rule double keeps Utley on bases; Hernandez out at first

MILWAUKEE -- Instant replay confirmed a ruling on the field in the eighth inning of the Phillies' 9-1 win over the Brewers on Thursday at Miller Park.

Umpires originally ruled Ryan Howard hit a ground-rule double down the left-field line against Milwaukee left-hander Will Smith. The Phillies argued the call, because it would have scored Chase Utley in addition to Jimmy Rollins.

But replay showed the ball clearly left the field before bouncing back into play.

Later in the inning, replay officials overturned a call when first-base umpire Brian O'Nora initially called Cesar Hernandez safe on a play at first base. Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett ranged to his left on a ground ball with two outs, and the call was overturned after replay showed Hernandez was clearly out at first.
